Words of wisdom for this week come from Luke Chapter 11:9-13
9 “And so I tell you, keep on asking, and you will receive what you ask for. Keep on seeking, and you will find. Keep on knocking, and the door will be opened to you. 10 For everyone who asks, receives. Everyone who seeks, finds. And to everyone who knocks, the door will be opened.
11 “You fathers-if your children ask[e] for a fish, do you give them a snake instead? 12 Or if they ask for an egg, do you give them a scorpion? Of course not! 13 So if you sinful people know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him.”
Food for thought
Last week we talked about our belief system and how sometimes we can believe things that just aren’t true, especially when we are influenced by our surroundings. Are we a product of our environment? We talked about how we don’t have to be! I shared about my dog Shannon and how he was smiling at me, not trying to bite my head off. I put a picture up from my Mom, thanks by the way. Oh, and I want to say that our perception is an interesting thing.
As I became a teenager I was exposed to something that was just incredible. MUSIC!
My brother’s cassettes- Heart- Dog and Butterfly, Baracuda, etc. Styx, Foreigner, Crosby Steels and Nash, etc. Then the day came that changed my life. I heard AC/DC and Black Sabbath! Iron Maiden really got my attention.
Influenced greatly by heavy metal bands, Ozzy Osborne, Ronnie James Dio, Black Sabbath, Deff Leopard, and so on. I also liked melodic Rock like Journey, Bryan Adams, REO Speedwagon, Journey and more.
I played my music loud and proud. In my Ford Pinto Hatchback with wood paneling. I had a hurkin’ Realistic Cassette stereo with bass booster.
Got my first guitar from my uncle, a 12 string acoustic, played house of the rising sun
Then my parents bought me a Heater Guitar and Crate Amplifier. Oh my goodness. I learned power chords, and it was all over!
AC/DC
Doobie Brothers
Scorpions
Iron Maiden
Ronnie James Dio
Black Sabbath -Iron Man
ALL THIS TIME I WAS REALLY SEARCHING FOR POWER.
I was pretty insecure as a kid, no reason for it, but I was. Hated PE, I was geeky, I was in band, drama, that kind of stuff, never liked sports much. I was picked last for baseball games, and so on.
Heavy metal and music made me feel powerful and I could see myself doing what my favorite star was doing.
MELT DOWN- My best friend told me to take a hike, that I was an egotistical jerk face.
My girlfriend dumped me, and things just got out of hand.
I was searching for significance in a world full of competition and dog eat dog.
Isn’t God just a crutch for weak people? Is there something bigger, or is this it?
All human beings need:
1. To be loved
2. To belong
3. To be part of something bigger
4. Fill our spiritual hearts.
We turn to a lot of things when God isn’t the center of what we need. I sure did, I still do sometimes.
What fills your heart? What do you run to to be loved, or belong? Are you part of something bigger?
My journey into faith came when I finally came to an end of myself. Something happened that forever changed the way I saw things. I’ll share that in some upcoming podcasts.
I want to play a song for you that a friend of mine wrote. We recorded it as a band called “The Church” It’s called blind to love.
Here are the lyrics
Blind to Love
by Mike Pirianian, With Rick Moyer, Don Stone and Kenny Miller-
He’s lost in a world that’s seems so cold
What will he do?, he’s not that old
Climbing on a bus that leads to nowhere.
Now dreams all he wants is to have success
to have it all he’ll do his best
climbin’ over anyone to get there
Don’t you know he’s blind to love?
(Blind to love)
He never realized how much he is thought of
Life is vain when you’re blind to love
(Blind to love)
this world holds much to gain
but it’s never, never enough when you’re blind to love.
Now pain deep in his heart is all he feels
he’s lost a hold of all that’s real
Tears of bitterness are his prize
Well Christ pierced the darkness of his soul
forgave him with love and made him whole
the price of the cross has opened his eyes
Don’t you know he’s blind to love?
(Blind to love)
He never realized how much he is thought of
Life is vain when you’re blind to love
(Blind to love)
this world holds much to gain
but it’s never, never enough when you’re blind to love.
What’s coming up next week? Hey man, you ruined my record! It’s going to be a blast, please come back and download the cast. Share this with a friend!
